Ability After The Course

  • Able to handle a powerboat in familiar waters by day.

  • Once you pass your RYA Powerboat Level 2, you can also apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Our powerboat courses take place from both WFYC and Titchmarsh marina. We will be in touch nearer your course with the exact plans. Often the course requires transport between WFYC and the marina, weather and tide dependent. Our course instructors may be able to help with this but unfortunately they cannot be responsible for the transport of under 18s. Please ensure parents and guardians of under 18s liaise with the instructor at the start of the course in regards to what transport is required.

We are lucky enough at WFYC to be able to instruct in both wheel and tiller driven powerboats. So you can have the opportunity to experience both.

Clothing for Training

  • Clothes appropriate for the weather conditions- but working on being on the water can be up to 10 degrees colder than the land. Waterproofs are essential.

  • Trainers, dinghy boots or wellies for the feet

  • Hats- always a woolly hat! remember it will always feel colder on the water. AND a wide brimmed hat if sunny

  • Change of clothes and towel

  • Sun bloc – helps prevent windburn and sunburn

  • Packed lunch + drink and snacks

  • Medication- if required- clearly labelled with instructions and name. please make instructor aware

  • Pen and paper

  • Passport sized photo

Buoyancy aids will be provided by the club.

Please arrive at the clubhouse 15 mins before the start time, changed and ready for training. Students will be met by an instructor at the front of the clubhouse on the benches.

Adult sailing-RYA Level 1 - Start Sailing
Sept
13
to 14 Sept

Adult sailing-RYA Level 1 - Start Sailing

A course for complete beginners. Learn how to sail in all directions and awareness of launching and recovery

Over 2 or 3 days, if the course is over 3 days it will be a short evening session on day 1.

You can expect 12 hours of tuition over 2 or 3 days. We run our courses on smaller instructor to student ratios here at WFYC to ensure you get the best possible experience.

You have the option of learning to sail in a larger, double handed boat with an instructor onboard for level 1, gradually moving out of the boat as you progress through the levels. If you sign up to this option you can expect 2 students to 1 instructor.

On the first day of your course your instructor will meet you and explain the aims of the course as well as discussing your own expectations and course outcome. You will have the chance to meet and talk to other course participants before being given a tour of the sailing area. There will be time to change into your sailing gear after the initial shore briefing so do not worry about coming ready to sail.

There will be a good break for lunch on both days and plenty of time for you to ask questions.

What you will need:

  • You are taking part in a watersport and you are likely to get wet, so always remember a change of clothes and a towel. Clothing for training – wetsuits are ideal, but if not, lightweight stuff that dries easily, with a couple of layers if it is cold, plus waterproofs.

  • Trainers or dinghy boots for the feet

  • Hats- always a woolly hat! remember it will always feel colder on the water. AND a wide brimmed hat if sunny

  • Sun bloc - helps prevent windburn and sunburn

  • Packed lunch + water or other drink

  • Medication- if required- clearly labelled with instructions and name. please make instructor aware

  • Optional extras: knee pads, sailing gloves

Buoyancy aids will be provided by the club.

Please arrive at the clubhouse 15 mins before the start time. Students will be met by an instructor at the front of the clubhouse on the benches.
